How to Blog - RSS in Plain English

What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The first time I read that it made my head spin, but don't worry it's a normal reaction. Simply put RSS is a way for you to get your posts distributed across the Internet.
Here's another way to look at it:
Let's pretend your blog is a newspaper. Everyday you create a new issue, and you want as many people as possible to read the latest edition. What is the best way to do this?
Would you insist on everyone coming down to your office to read the paper?
You could, and some people would make the daily trek. Some people would probably stop by a couple times a week, and others would swing less often. Some people would only come by once, and never return. However, there would be a whole lot of people how would find this extremely inconvenient. They would like to read your paper, but they don't have the time to come by the office. They are restricted by your hours of operation.
What a colossal waste of time!
Wouldn't a better way be to deliver the paper to your subscriber's home?
You would print up copies of your paper and have it delivered daily. This distribution one huge advantage. Mainly convenience for each person wanting to read your paper. Since the paper is being delivered to their home they are more inclined to read it on their own time. They are not restricted by your business hours.
In addition the paper gets more readers. Each reader gets their edition at home instead of hiking down to your office each and every day. Making it very convenient for everyone, and would probably increase circulation.
RSS works the same for your blog
Instead of forcing people to your blog to see the latest post. They can use RSS to bring the post to them in one central location. This greatly increases the odds of never missing your posts again.
